Nicola Bryars-Parker - Artist Bio

As a child Nicola remembers giant sheets of draftsman paper being brought home from her Dad’s engineering office, her Mum repurposing them into fabric patterns and drawing pads. This early connection to repurposing ignited her passion for drawing and influenced her choice to major in printmaking years later.

Nicola see’s life as a sacred ceremony, with every moment intertwined with the elements around us. Her journey was inspired by reading nature writer Robyn Wall Kimmerer’s book Gathering Moss, which explains Indigenous ways of understanding the natural world and land - reciprocity and being in right relationship with the earth and all living things.

Graduating from the University of New South Wales in 2000, with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, Nicola completed her final year on an exchange program at the University of Austin, Texas.

From 2003-2008 Nicola was a member of the contemporary Arts group The Upholstery. A highlight of this period was exhibiting in a group show, ‘Transience’ at Cairns Art Gallery, where her work was selected to tour Australia.

Her solo show ‘Biophilia’ in 2018 marked a pivotal moment, and by mid 2019, she fully committed to pursuing art as a full-time career.

Currently, Nicola is preparing a new body of work for a group show ‘Threshold’ at Northsite Contemporary Gallery in Cairns in January 2025.
And ‘Resilience’ at the Mulgrave Gallery in Cairns in March 2025.
